There are circumstances where an error occurs, and consequently we are unable to submit a payment for your User. Below are common errors for a Quarterly Tax Payment and steps to resolve them. It's important to take corrective action on the user’s behalf before the IRS payment deadline so that a new Quarterly Tax Payment can be submitted before the payment deadline.

User Errors

User-related errors are usually due to an invalid Social Security Number (SSN) or a mismatch between SSN and legal name. The following provides a timeline for a Quarterly Tax Payment that failed due to a userError:

  1. Create a Quarterly Tax Payment, status = "created"
  2. A User experiences a mismatch between legal name and SSN, status = "error", errorMessage = "userError"

To resolve a Quarterly Tax Payment with a userError, you should update the user's information with the corrected social security number and/or legal name by calling the PUT /users/{userId} API endpoint. Once you’ve done this, you can create a new Quarterly Tax Payment, and Abound® can reattempt the payment.

Payment Method Errors

A paymentMethodError errors occur when the account and routing numbers provided is invalid, inactive, or the payment did not go through. The following provides a timeline for that scenario:

  1. Create a Quarterly Tax Payment, status = "created"
  2. Quarterly Tax Payment is submitted to the IRS, status = "pending"
  3. IRS is unable to process the Quarterly Tax Payment due to invalid account and routing information, status = "error", errorMessage = "paymentMethodError"

To resolve a Quarterly Tax Payment with paymentMethodError, create a new Payment Method with valid account and routing numbers combination using the POST /user/{userId}/paymentMethods API endpoint. Once you’ve created a new Payment Method, you can create a new Quarterly Tax Payment and Abound® will reattempt the payment.
